For example, VHF (Very High Frequency) frequencies, which are in the range from 30 MHz to 300 MHz, work best for outdoors.

An imbatible fact about two-way radio antennas is that the higher up you go, the further your signal travels.
So, the best scenario for your two-way radio system is having a tall antenna in order to set up for maximum range.
In portables is good to have a 6 inches antenna, which can be purchased at an affordable price.
Changing the antenna is not an impossible mission. Most models will have either a pin or a flat connector.
So, look at the connector base on the radio and make sure the new antenna has the correct shape to fit the connector, being pin or flat.
Also, check if the antenna has a “UHF” or “VHF printed on it. You will need to confirm in the device user manual if that can work with that kind of antenna.
If you are using a mobile two-way radio, be sure your antenna is mounted on the outside of your vehicle, preferably on the roof, so you can get the antenna as high as possible.
Larger antennas are often required on lower frequency radios to improve communication.
