Tips and tricks when using Two-way Radio communications

No matter how long you have been using two-way radio communications in your company, there is always some room to improve.

This is certain, in special taking in account that many times some users may need training to get along with two-way radios.

That is a normal situation that should be addressed in any company at some point.

Nevertheless, we have noticed that some best practices can help improve two-way radio communications in any environment. These are the following:

  • Use a good volume when speaking toward the device
  • Hold the two-way radio device 2 inches away from your mouth when speaking
  • Press the PTT (Push to talk) button firmly all the way while transmitting a message and only release when you are done

Even seems obvious these way to simple best practices can improve two-way radio communications.

But sometimes you have harder problems, Let’s see some of them, finding a solution for each one.

Tips and tricks for a better Two-Way Radio signal

The most important factor affecting range (and, of course, the range we can get communicated by using two-way radios) is the terrain.

Even though a two-way radio can transmit up to 30 miles in perfect conditions, the earth curvature shorten that range up to 6.5 miles.

But besides that, is rare that we can transmit in a completely plain terrain. Most times there are obstacles that affect the signal.

Some of those obstacles are common things in cities, like buildings, hills, trees, etc.

With so many obstacles, is normal for a two-way radio device to be able to transmit up to only half a mile. That is really a fraction of the power this devices have.

By knowing well your circumstances and the places where you need to transmit, can be defined which frequency can help you to send your message the further possible.

For example, VHF (Very High Frequency) frequencies, which are in the range from 30 MHz to 300 MHz, work best for outdoors.

In the other hand, UHF (Ultra High Frequency) frequencies, which are in the range from 300 MHz to 3 GHz, are suited for indoors communications, like a manufacturing plant.

This is because this higher frequency is better to penetrate doors and windows.

If sometimes, despite the good circumstances, you fail in getting a strong signal, stand up can help to improve it over 1 mile.

Other tip would be to use High Power Mode in your device. This can boost your signal even in the densest areas.

Simply by choosing the right frequency to your conditions, you can assure your two-way radio systems can work smoothly or not.

Tips and tricks when an antenna is malfunctioning

An imbatible fact about two-way radio antennas is that the higher up you go, the further your signal travels.

So, the best scenario for your two-way radio system is having a tall antenna in order to set up for maximum range.

In portables is good to have a 6 inches antenna, which can be purchased at an affordable price.

Changing the antenna is not an impossible mission. Most models will have either a pin or a flat connector.

So, look at the connector base on the radio and make sure the new antenna has the correct shape to fit the connector, being pin or flat.

Also, check if the antenna has a “UHF” or “VHF printed on it. You will need to confirm in the device user manual if that can work with that kind of antenna.

If you are using a mobile two-way radio, be sure your antenna is mounted on the outside of your vehicle, preferably on the roof, so you can get the antenna as high as possible.

Larger antennas are often required on lower frequency radios to improve communication.

Tips and tricks about Two-Way Radio batteries

Other key factor in receiving a strong radio signal is having enough battery power. This simple fact can improve range and coverage.

The type of battery used can be decisive in getting communicated or not. The use of alkaline batteries is highly reccomended because add some extra power that can send your message out.

In normal conditions, batteries usually last between 18 and 24 months, according to its use.

Many models include a stamp with the month and year of fabrication. If any battery is older than 24 months, is not reliable and should be replaced.

Usually, two-way radio devices advise when the batteries are failing. To ensure you keep communicated, quickly change empty batteries.

Tips and tricks about Two-Way Radio maintenance

Constant and proper maintenance is a key to maximize two-way radios devices’ life. They are intended to last for 5 to 7 years.

You not only need they can be turn on, but also they can sound clear and be reliable devices.

That is why you need to follow these tips for their use and maintenance:

  • When needed, clean radios with a microfiber cloth and a just little water
  • Don’t grab radio devices by the antenna
  • Use only chargers and batteries suited for each device
  • Only charge as needed. Overcharging batteries can decrease their lifespan
  • Turn off radios and remove its batteries before storing
  • When not using them, store radios and battery packs at a room temperature of 72° F
